1 Month on - A reflection

Hi Everyone!

We’ve been open for 1 month now, and it’s been incredible to welcome you all back! I wanted to share a quick update and give special shout-outs to those who have supported Our House during a tough six months.

It’s no secret that the current climate is challenging, with many community spaces/businesses closing down up and down the country. Keeping Our House open has been a huge task with little funding for queer spaces. After losing our last venue in December 2023, we had to be very careful in our planning. Even now, our future is uncertain, but your support keeps us going.

A huge thank you to our amazing staff and volunteers who built the new space—you made it fun, and we couldn’t have reopened without you!

Special thanks to Suzanna, Eight, Linda, Kaitlyn and Chi for your ongoing support and the endless sanding/painting/cleaning. And to everyone interested in getting involved, we appreciate your patience as we process new applications.

To our small but mighty staff team, Harley & Moll especially, I couldn’t have done this without you.

Thank you to everyone who donated to our fundraiser. Your generosity was crucial in refitting the new space. For those waiting for your fundraiser gifts, they’ll be sent out in the next two weeks—thank you for your patience.

A big thanks to our community and commercial partners for your ongoing support. Special mentions to Trans Wakefield, The Hold It Up Collective, The Bookish Type, and The Art House.

Lastly, thank you to all our visitors and supporters. Our vision for Our House Wakefield is to create a space for local LGBTQ+ people to connect, organize, and thrive. We’ve seen new friendships, groups, and initiatives form, and we believe our community is stronger for it.

Keep visiting, buy a coffee, hang out, and get involved, together we are building something special!

May all queer spaces flourish!

~Lx
